OpenStreetMap
openstreetmap.org
A free, editable map of the world built by volunteers, whose open data powers a large number of apps and services.
Why it is useful
Because the data is open, you can download it, build on it or fix errors in your own neighbourhood. It often has detail such as footpaths and cycle routes that commercial maps leave out.
