Marginalia Search
search.marginalia.nu
Independent search engine that deliberately favors non-commercial, text-heavy, and obscure websites.
Marginalia Search is a search engine that favours the non-commercial, small and personal web. Instead of ranking by popularity and advertising, it prioritises independent sites, so results tend to be blogs, hobby pages and old websites that mainstream search buries.
It is open source, uses its own index and crawler, and says it filters out tracking and shares no data. The project is run by one developer and deliberately avoids AI. It also has tools for discovery, such as finding lost old websites. Use it when you want something different from normal results, not as your only search.
Why it is useful
Built by a single developer as an antidote to commercial search — it penalizes SEO-heavy and JavaScript-bloated pages in favor of content-dense text sites. Excellent for finding niche expertise that gets buried in Google under sponsored results.
