Windows 93
windows93.net
Fully interactive browser-based simulation of a fictional Windows 93 operating system, complete with running applications, games, and layered Easter eggs.
Windows93 is a web art project that imitates a desktop operating system. The desktop looks roughly like an old version of Windows, but it is full of strange programs, games, visual toys and jokes, all running in your browser.
There is nothing to install and nothing to take seriously: click around, open windows and see what happens. It is surreal, a little chaotic, and best enjoyed on a desktop browser with sound on. It is a good example of the playful, experimental side of the early web.
Why it is useful
One of the better examples of web-native digital art that still feels playful years later. Instead of being a single joke, it behaves like an explorable fake OS full of surprises, references, and tiny interactive detours. It captures the anarchic spirit of the old web far better than modern nostalgia skins or curated museum pieces.
