Vim Adventures
vim-adventures.com
A puzzle game that teaches Vim navigation by mapping terminal keystrokes to movement — first few levels free, full game paid.
Vim Adventures maps Vim modal navigation commands directly onto puzzle mechanics. Players move through levels using h, j, k, l and unlock new commands as the game progresses, building genuine muscle memory through play rather than rote memorisation. The first three levels are free; full access requires a one-time purchase.
Why it is useful
Vim keybindings are famously resistant to memorisation from cheat sheets. This game embeds the navigation logic into physical puzzle-solving, so the muscle memory forms naturally. It is the most effective on-ramp to modal editing that exists — and the most enjoyable one by a wide margin.
